TRUE TALES FROM THE TALLGRASS

Provided by the Lyon County Historical Society

The Kansas City Star newspaper published an editorial entitled “Concerning the Kansas Boy” back in 1894. The writer was responding to a paper read before the Kansas State Teachers’ Association at Topeka with the title “What Is Wrong with the Kansas Boy?” Perhaps teachers have scratched their heads from time eternal trying to understand what is right or what is wrong with any boy, but at that teachers’ meeting that year over a thousand teachers had “taken their spite out” on the Kansas boy. The editorialist declared the boys needed a friend, and he would stand up to say that there was nothing wrong with the Kansas boy! Back in 1894 he had learned to swim by jumping into the river or the pond. He had learned to skate or bicycle in a chancy climate, rain or wind, mud or snow! He had learned to pitch horseshoes or cornhole where it could be so windy that you’d have to pile something on them so they wouldn’t blow away. The Kansas boy could read any newspaper (or technical instruction on how to play any game on his computer) while neglecting the boring reading material in his early reader. He may be a little slow in spherical trigonometry, but he understands that it is a poor buzz saw that won’t work both ways. He probably learned his geography second hand, and guessed at his mental arithmetic, but he has the instinct of a steeltrap for a property deal. If dropped in a strange land, he could locate the nearest voting precinct and filing station. A Kansas boy is born under a lucky star. A good angel instills in his baby heart the knowledge that “genius is the capability for hard work”, and it opens all doors to him.

In 1894 it was a Kansas boy named Edward C. Little, ambassador to Egypt who represented the United States at Cairo in 1893 and went to see the khedive the first time he was ever in a dress suit. It was a Kansas boy named Frederick J.V. Skiff who was the curator of the Columbian museum at Chicago. It was a Kansas boy named Taral Fred who was recognized as one of the best jockeys on earth, eventually winning 1,437 races. A Kansas boy at Baker University held the world’s championship for the most rapid recitation of the Greek verbs, and a Kansas boy named Henry Lee Prescott would represent Harvard University in the Yale-Harvard debate of 1894. There was a Kansas boy named Frederick Funston who that year was making a botanical survey of the portion of the United States lying north of the Arctic circle but would later lead Army troops in the Spanish-American War and World War I known as General “Fighting Fred”. Another Kansas boy named Barnum Brown hunted the white rhinoceros in Central Africa for the Smithsonian Institution. A Kansas boy named Stocks looked after the interest of the United States treasury at the world’s fair, and a Kansas boy named Benjamin Briggs Herbert was vice-president of the National Editorial Association. An Emporia boy named Vernon Kellogg was treeing every bug in Kansas and writing a book about them. According to the Kansas City Star, the Kansas boy was everywhere except in jail; he gathered no moss because he didn’t like moss and it didn’t pay.
